The VicHealth Koori Health Research and Community Development Unit
Launched in June 1999, it was set up following consultation with the Victorian Aboriginal Communities and Community organisations. It was critical to develop this academic program in partnership with Indigenous Communities. We believe that partnerships are fundamental to the development of effective teaching and research in Aboriginal health that focuses on priorities important to Aboriginal people and promotes Aboriginal self-determination and cultural integrity. This is particularly the case given the historically problematic relationships between research academics and Aboriginal people. Critical to the development of partnerships was the development of a Community development framework for the work of the Unit.
