The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) is proudly celebrating three decades of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Victoria.

Since its establishment in 1996, VACCHO has played a vital role in strengthening the Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation (ACCO) sector by advocating for self-determination in Aboriginal health and wellbeing.

At the heart of VACCHO’s work are its 34 Member organisations, who deliver culturally safe care to Community every day, and this milestone is a recognition of their leadership, resilience and impact.

VACCHO Chief Executive Officer, Dr Jill Gallagher AO, said the anniversary is both a moment of reflection and a reminder to continue strengthening the sector and advocating for reform.

“For 30 years VACCHO has stood alongside our Members and Community, championing a model of care that is led by Aboriginal people, for Aboriginal people.”

“Our strength comes from our Member ACCOs delivering care on the ground and this milestone belongs to them and to the Communities they serve.”

“We know that when Aboriginal health is in Aboriginal hands, outcomes are stronger. That’s what we’ve seen over the past 30 years, and it’s what will continue to guide us into the future.” Dr Gallagher said.

VACCHO’s success has aways been built on strong partnerships with Community, government and the broader health sector and VACCHO and its Members remain committed to advancing health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Victoria.

Dr Gallagher acknowledges that while there is still so much more work to do, she is proud of how far VACCHO has come and is excited for what the future holds.

“VACCHO remains committed to realising generational change and to embedding Community, Culture and Country in all healthcare and wellbeing settings throughout the state.”

“From Gunaikurnai Country in the east, through to Gunditjmara Country in the west – our vision is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people everywhere to have equitable health and wellbeing service access and outcomes and to live strong and healthy lives,” she said.
