Launch of the Victorian Aboriginal Centre of Excellence in Social and Emotional Wellbeing

We are launching the Victorian Aboriginal Centre of Excellence in Social and Emotional Wellbeing, an initiative designed to foster innovation and improvement in social and emotional wellbeing practice, policy and research.

The launch is a historic moment for Community and the Centre will play a major role in improving the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people across Victoria. The Centre is currently being established by VACCHO in partnership with Aboriginal peoples and Communities across Victoria. It is a Centre for Aboriginal people, managed by Aboriginal people.

WHAT IS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING?
Social and emotional wellbeing is a holistic concept that encompasses physical, mental, social, and spiritual health and wellbeing. The concept recognises that the wellbeing of any individual is linked to the wellbeing of their family and Community. It also acknowledges the influence of social and economic factors and connections to land, language, Culture, and Ancestors on a person’s wellbeing.

The promotion of social and emotional wellbeing is central to improving the lives of Aboriginal peoples. Success requires a simultaneous focus on supporting individuals, Communities, and society. Aboriginal people need opportunities to learn self-care skills, practice their Culture and language, and connect to their family, Community, and Country.

ABOUT THE CENTRE
The Centre of Excellence is a key outcome from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. The Commission marked the first time in history that Aboriginal leaders, organisations, people, families, carers, and Communities were given the opportunity to have their voices and experiences included in a redesign of the mental health system. The Centre is one among three key initiatives in the Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing space that will see greater investment in promotion and prevention practices, workforce development and expansion, and stronger advocacy.
