The Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Theory and Practice (11037NAT) gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students the knowledge and confidence to undertake ethical, culturally safe research grounded in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context.
Delivered through VACCHO (RTO 20739), this program blends face-to-face workshops, online learning and Community-based projects over 12 months. You’ll gain practical, real-world research skills you can apply in your own Community and workplace.
Eligible students can complete this course free of charge.

COURSE OVERVIEW
This course provides a vocational qualification in research methods and practices in a Community context.
It’s designed for Mob who want to strengthen their skills in research and evaluation or pursue a career in research.
You’ll learn to:
- use research methods and practices in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context
- undertake ethical research with a strong foundation in co-design
- engage meaningfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- ensure culturally safe practice
- provide research support with a clear Community focus.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Theory and Practice includes seven units of competency:
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must meet the following entry requirements specific to VACCHO:
- be 18 years or older at the time of enrolment
- have recent volunteer or paid experience working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- complete a Learning, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment and Pre-training Review (PTR)
- be working, or beginning to work, in a research context
Research project activities will be undertaken through your workplace or Community connections.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR STUDIES & EXPERIENCES
If you’ve completed similar units or gained relevant skills through work or study, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer. Our team can guide you through this process during enrolment.
STUDY AND CAREER PATHWAYS
Graduates will be equipped to undertake research and/or evaluation projects in their own Communities and services.
This qualification can also support pathways into higher education in research design and methods.
FEES AND CHARGES
There are no course fees for eligible students. Funding may also be available to support travel and accommodation costs for eligible students.

- Desktop computer/laptop.
- Stable internet connection with a minimum download speed of 3mbps.
- An email account such as Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail.
- Microsoft Office (2010 version or later) – must include Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Video conferencing software – Zoom preferred.
