Why should I choose this course?

This qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working at the entry level of primary health care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients. Certificate III may be regarded by many jurisdictions as the minimum level for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health work.

What are my career opportunities?

Completion of this qualification may be regarded as the minimum level for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health work and provides broad entry level skills in primary health care.
 

The duration and training delivery

The Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care may be delivered in a flexible work-based mode combining on and off the job activities.  For off the job delivery clinical skills are developed and practiced in a simulated environment.  Where students are not employed, practical placement will be required.  It is recommended that 250 hours of work placement be undertaken across the core of the qualification.
 

Career pathways

This qualification can lead to other higher-level Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) qualifications such as:

  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice
  • Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
     

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites for admission to this course. Applications for this course are open only to people who identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent and are working in an Aboriginal Primary Health Care setting.

Prior to enrolment, applicants may attend an interview regarding their career aspirations. Admission requirements are completion of a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment.

All students need to be able to obtain a Police Check and a volunteer Working with Children Check.

Total number of units = 17

12 Core units:

  • CHCLEG001 Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework
  • HLTINF001 Comply with infection control policies and procedures
  • HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  • HLTAHW005 Work in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care context
  • HLTAHW006 Facilitate and advocate for the rights and needs of clients and community members
  • HLTAHW007 Undertake basic health assessments
  • HLTAHW008 Assist in planning and implementation of basic health care
  • HLTAHW009 Provide information about social and/or emotional support
  • HLTAHW010 Identify community health issues, needs and strategies
  • HLTAHW011 Assist with basic health screening, promotion and education services
  • HLTAHW015 Work under instructions to support the safe use of medication

5 Elective units:

  • CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations
  • CHCCCS026 Transport individuals
  • CHCCCS027 Visit client residence
  • CHCLLN001 Respond to client language, literacy, and numeracy needs
  • HLTAHW024 Work in alcohol, other drugs and mental health with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities
