The lands on which Cummeragunja is situated are the sovereign lands of the Yorta Yorta Nation, with the majority of Aboriginal people who live on Cummeragunja being descendants of the original ancestors.
Traditional lands and waters straddle the Dhungulla / Murray River with the communities of Cummeragunja and Barmah being at its heart.
Cummeragunja had long been a place of great importance to Aboriginal People, and has been occupied since time immemorial, thousands of years before the occupation by the English Crown. There are many places of great significance and importance to the Yorta Yorta People with Cummeragunja being regarded as one of those places of significance.
