The Smart and Deadly: Sexual Health Promotion for Aboriginal Young People Initiative was multi-sectoral community collaboration, coordinated by the Centre for Excellence in Rural Sexual Health (CERSH), addressing documented sexual health inequity in rural Aboriginal populations, undertaken over a 12 month period in 2011–2012. This pilot initiative targeted young people, Elders, parents and caregivers living in the Albury — Wodonga border town between Victoria and New South Wales and was grounded in the guiding principles of community ownership, inter-agency collaboration and cultural respect. The evaluation project will entail a systematic study of the initiative using qualitative grounded theory to document the evolution of the Smart and Deadly approach and pilot implementation, to identify its strengths and weaknesses and to describe a model for community engagement and activism based on the findings.
