May 14, 2025

VACCHO extends its warm congratulations to Sussan Ley on her appointment as the new leader of the Liberal party.

As a long-serving member of Parliament with experience in senior minister portfolios including health, VACCHO acknowledges the wealth of knowledge and expertise that Ms Ley brings to the role.

VACCHO CEO, Dr Jill Gallagher AO says strong leadership is critical in advancing the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities in Australia.

“It’s vital that Aboriginal voices are heard and respected at every level of decision-making in government,” Dr Gallagher said.

VACCHO reaffirms its commitment to working with all political Leaders to improve the lives of Aboriginal people.

Dr Gallagher said she looks forward to working with Ms Ley and hopes her new leadership brings with it a fresh approach to engaging with and listening to Aboriginal communities.

“Ms Ley, and indeed all Australians, should take pride in the fact that they live in a country with the oldest continuous living culture in the world,” Dr Gallagher said.

“I sincerely hope that Ms Ley’s leadership brings a renewed commitment to closing the gap in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
