Disabilities

VACCHO’s vision is to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability so that they have meaningful choice and control over their culturally safe disability services, with comprehensive wraparound support.

We work with our Members to learn about their experience providing disability services to Community and the barriers to becoming registered disability/National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) service providers.

Through regular check ins with NDIS Access workers, staff learn about the experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families who transition from no disability service to varied levels of support and advocate through various channels and levels of government to provide better outcomes for Community.

Key work:

  • VACCHO’s submission to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability – We advocated on related matters about the NDIS and funding for Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs). We want to ensure that Community voices and expertise are heard throughout this process and reflected in the Commission’s recommendations. The submission was drafted, reviewed, and submitted in October 2020.
  • VACCHO’s work with regard to the NDIS – We want to ensure Community has fair, equitable and easy access to the NDIS and cultural safe services. We continue to advocate for Community  experiencing disability and their families, to ensure they receive the best possible care.
